Time of Refreshing

Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,

I don’t know if anyone has noticed or not, but it has been hot outside! I usually don’t mind the hot weather too much, but in recent days it has definitely been pushing my ‘comfort’ button to the max!

This past week in the hot weather we celebrated Chandra and Vicki’s birthday. Chandra was in Scotland but we did finally get to talk with her. Her job took her there and she was having a good time.

Vicki just wanted time to get away and enjoy a steak. So we went to Amarillo and ate at Saltgrass Steak House. The food was good and it was nice inside so it was a good time. She really enjoyed the meal, but has a hard time with the guy who took her out to eat. Hopefully she can get him lined out before long.

But coming home the car kept up with the temperature outside. When we left Amarillo it was 98 but by the time we turned onto Price Road, it turned to 102! It was hot without even a promise of rain. The weather keeps saying we have a slight chance, but it seems like other places are more apt to get it than we are. The cracks in our yard seem to be growing in places.

The truth is we need a refreshing rain that will bring life back to the yards, the flower beds and just bring the temp down just a bit. As I considered the refreshing we need on our land, I considered the refreshing we need all across this world. From the White House to my house there needs to be a refreshing that touches us. From Wall Street to our street the hand of God needs to touch us in a special way.

As Peter was preaching on Solomon’s porch in Acts 3, he shared about what the leaders needed to do. He said in v. 19 – “Repent therefore and return, that your sins may be wiped away, in order that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord.” The time of refreshing that Peter spoke of was a spiritual refreshing. As ones sins are wiped away, the refreshing of Holy Spirit comes into their lives.

One of the words that continually comes up as I visit with laymen and pastors is apathy. It seems that people are apathetic about what takes place in the church and what they need to be doing. This type of apathy is sin. It is a disregard for the will of God in a person’s life. It is a time such as this that they need to follow the admonition of Peter in Acts 3:19.

The Church as a whole, needs a ‘time of refreshing’ to come from the presence of the Lord. We need to repent of the sins that have taken us away from the presence of God and our dependence on Him. We need the showers of His love to once again fall upon us. We need the gentle rain of His Spirit to wash across us and refresh our souls.

Just as I long to hear and see the rain falling outside, I long to hear and see the refreshing rain of Holy Spirit in our lives. I long to see hearts filled with Holy Spirit and those hearts filled with His refreshing.

Yet the question I find myself asking is this – How many of us truly are seeing Holy Spirit at work in our lives and are crying out for a time of refreshing to come to our souls? There is no doubt that now is the time God needs to be seen and heard through the lives of His people.

It is time for at great refreshing to be experienced by the Church as we repent of our sins and return to Christ so our sins might be washed away. We desperately need a time of refreshing because the cracks are big as they run across our lives.

As you pray for rain to fall on this land, will you also pray for the refreshing to come from the presence of the Lord? What a great refreshing that would be!

JESUS, JESUS, JESUS, there IS something about that name!!

Christ only, always,

Bro. Paul
