Man's Best Friend

Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,

This past weekend was tough at the Nachtigall houses.  When I say that, I am talking about at our house as well as Joshua and Danielle’s.  What was happening was tugging at our hearts and we knew things needed to be checked out.

Let me start at the beginning.  Joshua was in school at OSU in 2004 and he called to say that he was coming home for the weekend.  He said that he was going to bring a friend with him if that was okay.  We said it would be fine.

When he got here, he got out of the car and out jumped a black Lab mix puppy.  He called her Addy and she was a really cute puppy.  Joshua absolutely loved her.

All through college he would let us know how she was doing and how many new holes she had dug.  We got to see her when he came home or we went over and each time she looked good.

When Joshua was finishing up school he had to go to Colorado Springs to work in a resort.  Guess who kept Addy?  Yep, Memaw.  Addy just seemed drawn to her but she didn’t like me.  Even if I had treats, she would always pick Vicki.

After graduation Joshua moved to OKC to work.  He and Addy made the transition well.  When Joshua and Danielle lived in Maui Addy stayed with us.  Yep, Memaw said she could!  I fed her, put water out for her and did whatever I could to care for her, and she still wouldn’t have anything to do with me.

Since they moved back to Pampa, Addy moved home and Joshua got another dog.  Zorro is a full blood black Lab and is as goofy as the day is long.  He would lick all over her and she would let him.  Addy and Zorro did well together.

The past couple of years Addy has had a lot of issues with arthritis in her hips.  She would do pretty well through the summer months, but the winter was tough on her.  She struggled many times just to walk.

Recently things got worse for Addy.  She could hardly get around at all.  She wasn’t eating well and she had lost a great deal of her muscle mass in her hip area.  There were times when she got up to go out and Zorro would run by her and she would fall.

Joshua wanted to have her looked at to see if there was anything that could be done.  So on Friday, we went to have her checked out.  His vet told him that there was really nothing more they could do to strengthen her and that she was in a great deal of pain.  It was determined that her liver was failing as well.

Because of his great love for Addy, Joshua decided to let her go.  As he stood beside the table, he was petting her.  He leaned over and told her that she had been a great friend then gave her a kiss.  Leaving her behind was difficult for us all, but we know she is not hurting any longer.

God created every animal and dogs seem to be a special part of that creation.  They seem to know what you are feeling and just want to be close to you.  Addy was truly a special part of our lives.

All I can say is that Addy was definitely a gift from God to Joshua, his children as well as Vicki and me.  She finally let me into her world and would even let me give her a treat!

Addy was such a special dog and I am thankful that God created her and brought her into our lives.  She was truly man’s best friend.

JESUS, JESUS, JESUS, there IS something about that name!!

Christ only, always,

Bro. Paul
