Instructions to Follow

Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,

This past Saturday, Vicki took Danielle and Harper for a ‘girls’ day and do those girly things. So I decided to mow the lawn. I was working in the backyard when I heard Sutton and Joshua walking up the drive.

Sutton said that he wanted to come and see PaPaw. Anyway, he said hello to me then headed straight to the studio. Inside is a train table that we have only had the trains and some cars on. But that was about to change!

After I finished the back yard, I went in to see what they were doing. Joshua had all the wooden tracks out and was putting it all together. He had the instructions lying on the table and was trying to go by them. Sutton was just playing with everything.

Joshua would call a piece out and finally found it in Sutton’s hands or under a pile of other pieces. He would pick up a plastic rock and build the ramp up to a bridge. I went to take a shower and told them I would be back in a bit.

When I got back to the studio the train track was fully complete and Sutton was having the time of his life! He would put the engines on the track then connect other cars. Before long he had a fairly long train trying to make a short turn. It didn’t work well but it was the challenge that kept him going.

I asked Joshua how he did it. He said he just followed the instructions. He said they didn’t give everything exactly, but he followed them as best he could. The end result was a completed track.

The truth is that is what we must do in our lives. We must follow the instructions that God has set forth in His Word. There are instructions how we are to treat one another, take care of ourselves, and to honor God.

When it says we are to love our neighbor as ourselves (Lev. 19:18), it doesn’t tell exactly what we are to do, it just points us in the way to go. When it says to honor your father and mother (Ex. 19:18) it doesn’t say what all that involves but we are to do it.

All through Scripture there are commands that we are to follow. The exact instructions aren’t given in every case, but we are to follow them the best that we can. As we piece together the life God has given us, we must keep the goal in sight.

Joshua’s desire was to provide his son with a train track that would provide him with some entertainment. God’s desire is to provide us with the direction we will need to live a life that honors Him. Whether it be clearly set forth or pointed out in a parable, God wants us to follow the instructions found in His Word.

2 Timothy 2:15 says -- “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.” As we accurately handle the word of truth we will be able to complete our walk with the Lord.

I recognize the instructions aren’t always exact, but just remember that if we let God lead, we will achieve the end result that will honor Him.

JESUS, JESUS, JESUS, there IS something about that name!!

Christ only, always,

Bro. Paul
