Sharing the Bread

Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,

This past week held something that I had never thought would happen to me.  I know things get crazy in my life at times, but what took place really surprised me.  I know I have shared some crazy things, but this one is surely at the top of the list.

I just want to share a little bit with you.  This past week Vicki and I had the opportunity to spend the night with her sister and husband in Jenks, OK.  They have a beautiful house and property.

But I can’t forget to tell you about their beautiful little girl named Hannah.  This little girl, who is six years old, is just a ball of energy!  She runs from one thing to another and is absolutely filled with life.

She calls Vicki – Memaw but calls me Paul.  It works for us so all is well.  But what I found out while we were there is that Hannah wanted Paul to play games and do puzzles with her.  But her greatest joy was showing me her chickens.  She has 18 chickens – 8 full grown with 10 younger ones!

She just had to show us all of her chickens and tell us their names.  When one went into the front yard, she wanted me to go with her to get it in the backyard.  I went out with her and she just picked up this full grown chicken and carried it to the backyard.  It was simply amazing that this 6 year old would even touch a chicken.

Then she showed Vicki and I something that was truly amazing.  She took a piece of bread out to the yard and began to tear it apart all the while making some kind of sound and the chickens started moving toward her.  Then she would throw the bread on the ground and they would run to get it.

Before long they were running into each other trying to get to the bread before another could get it.  Hannah would tear off more and it would all start again.  When the bread was gone, they just looked at her then headed back to the chicken coup.  It was really neat to watch.

But I learned something.  Those chickens knew Hannah and that she would be there to take care of them.  This wasn’t a trick, but a treat that she had shared with them before.  Hannah provided them with bread as a ‘snack’ which they absolutely loved.

As I thought about this, it made me think about how God works in our lives.  There are times when He moves in our lives in such a way that we receive some wonderful gifts from Him.  But there are times when He only gives us a little bit that moves us toward Him and the greater gifts that He has for us down the road.

Yet in the midst of it all He provides us with the ‘bread of life’ that enables us to move forward in what we need to do.  Yes, it may come in little bits at a time or possibly as a full meal, but it is that bread of life that carries us through.

In John 6:35, Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst.”  Just like those chickens ran to Hannah, we need to be running to Jesus to partake of the bread that He offers us.

Then in John 6:51 Jesus said, “I am the living bread that came down out of heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread also which I will give for the life of the world is My flesh.”

Not only is He the bread that fills us here and now, but will fill us for all eternity.  We will live forever as we partake of the bread He gives us.  This just shows me that God is always moving us in the direction that will place us where we need to be.  We will be with Him forever.

There may be someone today that you can share the ‘bread of life’ with along the way.  Make sure you share it with them.  It may well make an eternal difference.

JESUS, JESUS, JESUS, there IS something about that name!!

Christ only, always,

Bro. Paul
