Tossed Aside

Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,

Years ago our church family signed up to keep Texas beautiful.  We adopted a 2 mile stretch of highway out along highway 60 that goes through Kingsmill.  It has been a pretty neat experience for the most part.

This past Saturday, some of our church family got together to pick up trash once again.  We were out on Saturday morning and were able to experience some of the ‘cool’ weather.  All in all things went well.  Other than a few sore backs no one was injured.

One of the things we always like to do is talk about some of the things we pick up along the way.  The winner this year was Christmas ties.  Yes, you read that right – Christmas ties.  All in all we found 5 Christmas ties.  I believe it was 3 red and 2 green.  Some of them had ‘lights’, while others were your normal ties.

You never know what you are going to find when you pick up ‘trash’ along the highway.  I remember one time that Vicki picked up a twenty dollar bill just after we started.  I confess we didn’t put it in the trash bags!  It went into the offering plate, which I’m sure that is where the person who lost it would have wanted it to go.

This made me stop and think about how people are looking at the times when we celebrate Christ.  We just passed Easter and the Easter candy was marked down to half price.  Easter clothes were marked down to get them out of the stores.  Then we go out to pick up trash and find Christmas ties tossed alongside the road.

It seems like we celebrate Christmas or Easter and then just kind of push it to the side.  In reality the birth and the resurrection of Christ are not just temporary events.  They are not something to be observed then cast off to the side of the road of life.  It goes much deeper than that.

When Jesus was sharing with Nicodemus in John 3, He said something that lets us know just how important these times are.  In John 3:16, Jesus said – “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.”

Jesus birth by a virgin reveals the fullness of what God was doing.  Jesus came that we might have life and have it abundantly (Jn. 10:10).  It was not to be remembered one day of the year and then cast aside.

Jesus’ resurrection was not intended to be something that is remembered one day and tossed aside for another year.  His victory over death and the grave brings a victory to our lives that should make a difference in the way we live every day.  He calls us to go deeper with Him as we walk through each day.

Christmas and Easter were not intended to be holidays that we simply observe once a year.  Because of Christmas we have a Savior born, who is Christ the Lord!  Because of Easter we have a Savior who has risen, victorious over death!

I’m not sure why those ties were thrown out along the highway.  Neither am I sure why Easter abruptly ends the day after.  This I am sure of – Jesus is alive and desires to be in a life changing relationship with every person.  Don’t just toss Him aside.

JESUS, JESUS, JESUS, there IS something about that name!!

Christ only, always,

Bro. Paul
