The Darkness

Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,

Amayah came over for a sleepover this past weekend.  Vicki picked her up on Friday and from the time she arrived she talked and talked.  They went to the water park on Saturday and then I met them at the playground so she could play a while.  She had a great time climbing, sliding, and swinging.

We went back to the house and Joshua called to see if we wanted to go get a sno-cone.  Of course we did!  He came over and we went to get one.  After we picked it up we headed back to the house to finish it off.

As we were heading home we noticed that it looked like rain coming.  Just after we got to the house it hit.  The wind was throwing our patio furniture around like it was nothing.  I could hardly believe how strong the wind was.  It wasn’t long until the lights flickered and the electricity went off.

Joshua got a call from the hotel and headed out there.  He called me and was in amazement at what all had taken place.  He told me about some of the damage that he had seen.  So Vicki, Amayah and I got in the car to go take a look.  We saw fences down, car windows shattered, power lines down and tree limbs everywhere.

We got home and the darkness in the house was already great.  I found a couple of lights and set them up so we could see a little.  We talked about what we would do in the morning if there was no electricity.  Finally, I decided to go to bed.

As I shut the light off, the darkness was overwhelming.  There was some light from the moon but not enough to make it ‘normal’ in the house.  It was in that darkness that I prayed.  I prayed for those having to be out handling the destruction we had seen.

I prayed for those who would be working on the electrical lines that they might be safe.  I prayed that they would be able to fix the problems so that we would have power.  I prayed that the darkness would be overcome by the light.

It was 12:45 when the power came on.  I went around the house shutting windows, turning off lights and setting clocks.  I crawled back in bed giving thanks that we had power, but continuing to ask God to be with those who were out working.

As I thought about all that had taken place one verse came to my mind.  It was Ephesians 6:12 – “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.”

In our spiritual lives there is that battle going on ‘against the world forces of this darkness.’  The darkness makes it difficult to do the things that need to be done.  We struggle to do the things that we are called to do.  The ‘darkness’ desires the ‘spiritual forces of wickedness’ to defeat us.

That storm came upon us with mighty winds and hard rain causing destruction all across the north part of Pampa.  It came with a power that we had not seen here in some time.  But it left us in darkness that made things even more difficult.

As the darkness fell on Saturday night the one thing we could do was trust God.  It’s as Charles Spurgeon said – “To trust God in the light is nothing but to trust him in the dark – that is faith.”

When the darkness falls in your life will you by faith let God lead you?  As you trust Him, He will lead you each step of the way.

JESUS, JESUS, JESUS, there IS something about that name!!

Christ only, always,

Bro. Paul
