Fresh Coat of Paint

Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,

Bob is home!! After 74 days in the hospital he was released and went home. Now they have to figure out how to do all the little things that are a part of his continued healing. It won’t be easy, but they are determined to do whatever is needed so they can be at home.

Bob still needs help in certain areas, but he is talking better, eating some and enjoying his food. He still has to have thickened liquids until his next swallow test. I am sure by that time he will be doing well. That is a good thing.

Things continue to be crazy around our house. The craziness changes from week to week. In the coming days there will be birthdays and graduations. We have two grandkids that are graduating from Kindergarten and two graduating from High School.

But the craziness doesn’t stop there. Vicki is having her Pre-K Sunday School class do something special for their Moms. So she purchased some things and was going to prepare them after church on Sunday evening. That is when she shared with me what I needed to do.

She wanted two orange chairs spray painted. But the thing is she wanted them done white first then with the ‘beautiful’ color she had picked out. Let me just say that it was no fun! They are metal but not solid and it was difficult to say the least. I now have to get more white spray paint before I can finish them up.

But since I couldn’t finish them up, she said I could use some of the spray paint we had and spray paint the big ‘N’ that hangs on the back fence. Since I had first painted it, the sun had evidently made it less noticeable. She thought it would be good to freshen it up with a new and fresh coat of spray paint.

Needless to say, my Sunday evening following the services was spent doing the things that Vicki wanted me to do. But as I was painting the “N” with its new color, I began to think about something. The “N” is there because our name is Nachtigall. It has become a part of our backyard decorations, but still points to our name so we want it to look the best it can.

Whether it is the “N” or the chairs, Vicki wants it to look the best that it can. By putting on some fresh spray paint they will look so much better. It will cover up much of the use the chairs have gotten and the weather the “N” has endured.

As I considered the change the spray paint made on the chairs and the “N”, I realized that this is a similar change that takes place in a person’s life when they confess their sin and turn from it. Jesus covers us with His blood and we are cleansed and made new.

Psalm 32:1-5 says – 32 How blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, Whose sin is covered! 2 How blessed is the man to whom the Lord does not impute iniquity, And in whose spirit there is no deceit! 3 When I kept silent about my sin, my body wasted away through my groaning all day long. 4 For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me; My vitality was drained away as with the fever heat of summer. Selah. 5 I acknowledged my sin to You, And my iniquity I did not hide; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord”; And You forgave the guilt of my sin. Selah.

Just like a fresh coat of spray paint changes the chairs and the “N”; the confession of our sins to the Lord brings forgiveness. What was wasting away because of unforgiven sin is made new through Christ. 1 John 1:9 says – “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

I might have to spray paint those chairs or the “N” again but Christ takes care of the sin once for all time. Now that’s what I call a ‘fresh coat of paint!’. Need ‘a fresh coat of paint’ in your life? Go to Jesus.

JESUS, JESUS, JESUS, there IS something about that name!!

Christ only, always,

Bro. Paul
