An Example

Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,

On Saturday Vicki planned to go to Amarillo to see Piper and Charity.  She told me I could ride along if I would be nice.  After some serious thinking, I decided to go.  Then she told me she wanted to do a little shopping.

We pulled into Amarillo and went straight to the Mall; then, you guessed it -- to Kohl’s.  I stayed in the car at Kohl’s and read.  I figured she would get things taken care of quicker if I wasn’t following along asking when she was going to be done.

While I was reading, Charity called and told me that Cole, Emily and their three boys were going to be stopping in Amarillo for lunch.  We could meet with them if we wanted.  I went and talked with Vicki and she said that would be fine.

Emily is one of my youngest sister’s daughters.  I had the blessing of performing their marriage ceremony in Branson 15 years ago.  We met and just had a great time visiting and sharing.

After we got home I began to think about how nice it was to be able to spend some time with them.  It’s not often that I get to share time with a couple for whom I did their marriage ceremony.  Then getting to visit with their boys made it even more special.

As I thought about our time, I thought back to their marriage ceremony.  You see, they had made a commitment to one another when they started dating that they would not kiss each other until the day they got married.  I just remember how they shared with me their commitment to one another and the values they had chosen.

True Love Waits had been a part of their lives leading up to their being together.  The commitment that they made stemmed from time when Emily determined that she wanted to keep herself for the man that she would marry.  Then to find the man that had made a similar commitment made their marriage ceremony an amazing time.

I can still feel the emotion when I pronounced them as husband and wife and told them they could share that kiss.  I’m telling you that whole chapel was filled with love that was so amazing.  I had to reach for my handkerchief!

Now it is 15 years later and to see them exchange looks and feel the love they share is amazing.  They have truly followed the direction of Scripture in Ephesian 5 where Paul wrote --

22 “Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body. 24 But as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives ought to be to their husbands in everything. 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, 26 so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy and blameless. 28 So husbands ought also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself;”

They are not only setting a good example for their boys, but for others who follow after them.  Truth is it is a pretty good example for all of us.

It makes me wonder how I am doing.  How about you?  Are you an example for those following after you?

JESUS, JESUS, JESUS, there IS something about that name!!

Christ only, always,

Bro. Paul
