A Blank Page

Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,

Every article that I write begins in the same way.  I don’t mean with the greeting.  I mean with a blank page.  Usually there is something moving me in a particular direction that causes the words to line up across the page.  It is then that my thoughts begin to develop.

Sometimes my thoughts run here and there not seeming to have much continuity.  At other times they begin to line up until they are fully formulated.  It’s hard to explain how it all takes place. Writers down through the years have put down words to share the insights they have in a particular area.

I’ve read great writers from John Bunyan, C.S. Lewis, Billy Graham, John Marshall and Max Lucado.  These writers seem to be able to articulate ideas that I have had but have been unable to set forth.  In recent days I have had the privilege of reading some great writers as they shared devotions each day.

The amazing thing is that each of them started the same way.  Each of them started with a blank page, a page that was yet to have words written on them.  Yet the thoughts in their minds became words on a page that conveyed the thoughts they sought to convey with all who would read the words they penned.

I am so thankful that there are those who can transfer the thoughts in their minds into words placed on the pages of books.  It is amazing how the words can come off the pages, enter my mind and impact the way I see a particular subject.  Words are truly powerful instruments which can share thoughts with others.

Scripture is a compilation of writings by men under the leadership of God.  2 Timothy 3:16-17 says – “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.”

We know that these men didn’t just sit down and begin to put random thoughts on pages.  Many times we read the words – ‘that the Scripture might be fulfilled,’ which lets us know that God was and is behind each word.

I have always loved what John wrote in John 20:30-31 when he penned the words, “Many other signs therefore Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these have been written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.”  What an awesome statement of the power in the written word of God.

John surely started with thoughts in his mind and a blank piece of paper (scroll) as he set forth the record of Jesus Christ.  Paul surely had in his mind the work of God in his life and allowed Holy Spirit to lead him as he wrote.  Yes, the paper was blank, but God gave the inspiration for the writers to place words that would point people to Himself.

I would never align myself with writers such as C.S. Lewis or Max Lucado, let alone John or Paul.  Yet like them I have been entrusted with a blank page on which to write.  I pray that the words that I write will bless and encourage hearts.  But most of all I pray they will help people to believe that ‘Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing they may have life in His name’.

You have a blank page as well.  As you fill up the blank page before you what will you write on it?  Will it be words that lift up those around you?  Will it be with words that encourage hearts?  Take a moment right now and ask God to reveal to you exactly what you are writing on your blank pages.  Surrender the pen of your life to Him and allow Him to guide the pen across the blank pages He has provided for you.

JESUS, JESUS, JESUS, there IS something about that name!!

Christ only, always,

Bro. Paul
