In Times Like These

Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,

Sunday afternoon one of the women of the church, Vicki B, came into my office.  She asked if I had heard about what happened in the church down state.  She explained that there had been a shooting at First Baptist Church, Sutherland Springs, TX.  She told me what she knew at that time and I told her I would follow up on it.

When I pulled it up I was totally in shock.  Here was this small church in a small town where someone had walked in and began shooting.  The latest report that I have read is that 26 were killed and 20 more were injured.

One teen said that because of the way the church is laid out it would have been difficult for anyone to escape the shooter.  He said that he ordinarily attends but didn’t make it on Sunday morning.  He was totally in shock at what had taken place.

I know that they identified the one who did the shooting and by the time you read this, have probably identified all who were killed and injured.  The struggle that pastor, the church, the community and the county are going through at this time surely is overwhelming.

I had my Sunday evening message ready, but God led me to share about this tragedy and how we must face the days ahead.  In many respects the next time we gather will be the same as the last, yet surely what happened in Sutherland Springs will change the way that we look at the blessing we have been given.

I shared with our church family the words to a song called, “In Times Like These.”  The first verse says – “In times like these, you need a Savior, In times like these you need an anchor; Be very sure, be very sure, Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock!”

With all that has been taking place in our world we question what is going on and how are things going to work out.  I wish I had a complete answer to share with you but I don’t know how everything is going to work out.

But I do know that even with evil permeating every level in our world that God is still in control.  He has not given control over to satan.  I’ve read the end of the book and God wins!

What happened in Las Vegas, Sutherland Springs and is happening across our world will not be solved by gun control.  The only way that we can see the wrongs righted and peace come will be solved by “God control”.  He is the answer for the problems we are facing in our nation.

Like the chorus of the song says – “This Rock is Jesus, Yes He’s the One, This Rock is Jesus, the only One; be very sure, be very sure, Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock!”

Philippians 4:6-7 says – “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, shall guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Lives have been turned upside down in Sutherland Springs and across Texas.  Family and friends died in what is surely a senseless act.  But God is still God and He is still present.  So ‘in times like these’ hold to your faith in God, pray that God will bring peace to hurting hearts and hold to God as He brings His perfect peace.’

JESUS, JESUS, JESUS, there IS something about that name!!

Christ only, always,

Bro. Paul
