Center of God's Will

Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,

We are definitely moving ever closer to Christmas! Just 7 more days until people all across the world will stop to celebrate the day. Sure it will be different for some but it will still be a time when they pause. For us as Christians, Christmas is a time of remembering what God did by sending His Son into this world.

As I thought about some of the things we are doing, it made me stop and think. Joseph was a simple carpenter from Nazareth evidently with a desire to be all that he could be for God. He found out that Mary was going to have a child so he was going to put her away secretly.

I believe that Joseph was a good man, but struggled with his pride at this time. He just wasn’t sure about everything. Yet it was at this time that God spoke to him.

We find in Mt. 1:20-21 that an angel appeared to Joseph with the admonition for him not to be afraid of taking Mary as his wife. The baby that she was carrying was conceived by Holy Spirit and His name would be Jesus. It was an unbelievable time for Joseph, but one that changed his life. Scripture tells us that “Joseph arose from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him.”

Those verses made me stop and think. Joseph had things planned out. He was going to wed his beloved Mary. They were going to have children and he was going to teach them the ways of a carpenter as well as the ways of the Lord.

It was going to be a good life filled with love and joy. The house would be filled with laughter and even when the difficult times came, they would find a way to overcome.

Then came the announcement. His world didn’t actually cave in, but it was dented by the situation he found himself in. What had been so perfect in his mind was now turned upside down. It’s amazing when you stop and think about it. Joseph had it worked out, God had a plan and Joseph was called to change.

That seems to be the way it is with us as well. We have things planned out for our lives knowing that they will be just perfect. Then something happens, someone comes along, or we find ourselves in a different situation and our world changes.

As we enter this Christmas season, I definitely have some plans concerning what is going on and what will take place. What changes will enter into this time, I don’t know. I am sure that Vicki will tell me some of the changes but God will reveal the rest to me.

I do know that God is always at work in our world. Because of this there is nothing stagnant about this time of year (or any time for that matter). Just as Joseph had things planned out, so do I and I’m sure you do as well.

Yet as God reveals His plans and intervenes in our lives at this time, I wonder. I wonder if we will do as the Lord commands us?

It is my hope and prayer that we don’t get so busy with Christmas that we fail to recognize the movement of God in our lives. Hopefully we will arise from our sleep and do as the Lord commands us to do. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate Christmas than to be in the center of God’s will.

Mele Kalikimaka!

JESUS, JESUS, JESUS, there IS something about that name!

Christ only, always,
